Passengers on a Jet2 plane bound for Spain this morning were forced to evacuate using inflatable emergency chutes after smoke was reported in the cabin just as the plane was about to take-off.

The pilot of the Boeing 737 plane made an emergency stop at around 7.40am after fumes were detected. Seventeen people were reported to have minor injuries after the evacuation.

Flight terror: The Jet2 plane was evacuated - using inflatable chutes - at around 7:40am this morning

Four people including an elderly female passenger were taken to hospital suffering leg and chest injuries. 13 people received medical treatment at the scene.

No-one is understood to have been seriously injured. All 189 passengers on board used the inflatable chutes to exit the plane, which had been scheduled to fly to Alicante.

One passenger onboard, Natalie Crawford, from North Lanarkshire said: 'Just as the plane was about to lift off, there was a strong smell of smoke and the cabin instantly filled up.'

At the time of the evacuation, a Strathclyde Police spokeswoman said: 'We are currently dealing with an ongoing incident at Glasgow Airport involving a 737 aircraft following reports of smoke within the cabin.

'Emergency services are in attendance and the passengers have been evacuated as a precaution.'

A statement from Jet2 shortly after the evacuation said: "This morning's flight LS177 from Glasgow Airport to Alicante made an emergency stop on the runway just prior to take-off.

'The aircraft was forced to curtail take-off due to smoke in the cabin.

'All 189 passengers have disembarked the aircraft.'

Flights at Glasgow Airport have now resumed after the runway was re-opened at 10am.
